TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Rattlers brought their brooms with them to Mobile, Alabama for day two of the South Alabama Invite as they beat both Charleston Southern (25-13, 25-21, 25-23) and Jacksonville (25-22, 25-12, 25-20) in every set played today.
"I'm very proud of our team staying consistent," said head coach
Gokhan Yilmaz. "We added to our lead with good transition play.
"Our Team showed a lot of fight and promising serve receiving."
Match One vs. Charleston Southern
The Rattlers started the day with a morning match versus Charleston Southern, which they dominated early on, taking the first set 25-13. The final two sets were close as the Rattlers won 25-21 and 25-23.
Junior
Dominique Washington had an all-around performance as she led the Rattlers in kills (10) and digs (12). Washington also finished with the second-most aces (2) and blocks (2).
Freshman
Irem Ucar was an assist machine as she had 25 of the 33 team assists.
As a team, the Rattlers outperformed the Buccaneers in five of the six major categories: points (47-37), kills (37-25), aces (7-5), assists (33-21), and digs (40-29).
Match Two vs. Jacksonville
Florida A&M picked up where they left off earlier when they faced Jacksonville in the afternoon as they had an intense first set but prevailed 25-22. Rattlers would follow set one with two dominating performances as they won 25-12 and 25-20.
Junior
Dominique Washington continued to show her offensive firepower as she led the team in kills again with 11. Washington would finish with the second-most digs with 12.
Junior
Jessa Long covered the whole court defensively as she led the Rattlers with 17 digs, tied for the most by any Rattler this weekend.
Freshman
Irem Ucar continued to set up her teammates as she recorded 23 of the team's 32 assists.
As a team, the Rattlers outperformed the Dolphins in all six major categories: points (45-35), kills (36-29), aces (6-4), blocks (3-2), assists (32-26), and digs (55-36).
All-Tournament Team
Junior Dominique Washington
"Dominique played a very consistent game," said Yilmaz. "She is still trying to find her stride, and she will continue to improve."
Washington led the Rattlers with 34 kills and 41 digs this weekend. Washington added four blocks and four service aces.
Freshman Irem Ucar
"Irem is a very experienced setter who can involve all of our hitters, and she has run a clean offense for us," said Yilmaz. "We are expecting her to get more comfortable with time and be one of the best setters not only in the SWAC but also in our region."
Today's victories put the Rattlers at 2-1, their best start since '97 when the Rattlers started 3-0. Florida A&M volleyball returns to action next weekend in Ft. Myers for the FGCU Classic.
