FAMU Softball Falls in Opening Games of JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge

Jacksonville, Fla.| Florida A&M Softball opened the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge falling in game one to North Florida, 8-0, and game two to USC-Upstate, 16-3.

Game 1
Sydnee Worthy went 2-for-2 as the Rattlers dropped the first game to UNF (6-6) 8-0 in five innings.

The Rattlers (0-5) had a promising start, getting back-to-back two out singles from Seriah Brokenborough and Worthy. However, the Rattlers couldn't push any runs across. 

The Rattlers were limited to three hits on the afternoon. 

Brandice Boatwright (0-2) got the start on the mound for FAMU, working 3.2 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking two. Gabriella Williams made a relief appearance, surrendering two runs on three hits with two walks.

The Ospreys' Morgan Causen (2-2) got the win allowing no runs on three hits, while striking out six. 

Game 2
Brokenborough and Worthy both picked up RBIs in the loss to USC-Upstate (7-2). Five Rattlers hammered out hits.

The game began on a promising note for FAMU (0-6), Melkayla Irvis opened the game drawing a walk. After advancing to second on a ground out to shortstop. Brokenborough knocked in her first RBI with a single to centerfield. 

Trailing 7-1 in the top of the third inning, the Rattlers were able to tack more runs on the board. Iravis opened the inning with a single and subsequently stole second. Kayling Rhone reached base on an error. Brokenborough picked up her second RBI of the day after grounding out to third base, scoring Irvis. Worthy followed up with an RBI single to centerfield to score Rhone.

FAMU's troubles came primarily on defense where the Rattlers committed five errors. 

Sarah Price led the Spartans at the plate, going 4-for-4 with six RBI and four runs scored.

Nadia Zenteno (0-2) started on the mound for the Rattlers, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk in 1.1 innings pitched. 

Gabriella Williams made her second relief appearance of the day, pitching 2.2 innings nine runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks.

Savannah Brown (3-1) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

FAMU continues action in the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge on Saturday with games against Georgia State at 1 p.m. and Jacksonville at 6 p.m. Both games will be held at Debbie & Fred Pruitt Field on the campus of Jacksonville University.
