Irvis Has a Big Day as Florida A&M Drops Unconquered Invitational Finale

Tallahassee, Fla. | Florida A&M Softball cranked out five hits but fell to Florida Gulf Coast (6-8) in five innings, 9-1, in the finale of the Unconquered Invitational hosted by Florida State.

Sophomore outfielder Melkayla Irvis had a big day at the plate for the Rattlers (0-4), going 2-for-2 with a single and triple with one run scored and a stolen base.

The Rattlers started the game on a promising note with its first two batters getting on base. Kenyaamari Jones drew a leadoff walk, and Irvis singled up the middle. Irvis and Jones stole second and third to put the Rattlers in scoring position, but Jones was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice and Irvis got caught trying to steal third to end the scoring threat.

With the Rattlers trailing 6-0 in the top of the fourth, Irvis hit a triple to deep centerfield to put the Rattlers back in scoring position. Seriah Brokenborough hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Irvis home for her second RBI of the season.

Zaria Hall picked up first hit of the year with a single in the top of the fifth.

Nadia Zenteno (0-1) pitched 4.0 complete innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits with four walks.
