Florida A&M’s Bryant and Rayburn Homer in Loss to South Florida

Tampa, Fla.| LJ Bryant and Tucker both hit home runs as Florida A&M baseball lost 9-4 to South Florida at USF Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In contrast to the first two games of the series, which saw FAMU (0-7) tally just five hits combined, the Rattlers scored four runs on seven hits. The two homeruns also marked the FAMU's first multi-homerun game of the season.

The Rattlers opened the scoring up in the second at-bat of the game when Rayburn drilled 0-1 pitch over for a two-run homer.

USF (3-3) answered right back with two long flies of their own. Riley Hogan hit three-run homer and two batters later, Carmine Lane cranked a one-run homerun to give the Bulls 4-1 lead.

FAMU starting pitcher, Chandellor Benton (0-2), pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of baseball following the early barrage by the Bulls. Benton tossed 4.1 innings, in total, striking out seven, giving up five runs on four hits and walking three.

FAMU clawed its way back into the contest in the fourth and fifth innings. LJ Bryant ripped a leadoff homer over the left field wall to pull the Rattlers within one in the top of the fourth. In the fifth inning, Seyjuan Lawrence worked his way on base with single. The advanced to third base on errant pickoff attempt by USF reliever Baron Stuart. Lawrence tied the game at four when he scored on a wild pitch.

USF did the rest of its damage in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on five runs on five hits to stretch the Bulls lead to 9-4.

Carter Slentz put in 0.2 innings of relief work for FAMU, four runs on four hits while walking two batters. Shawn Host finished off the game for the Rattlers striking out two and giving up two hits in 3.0 innings.

Collin Sullivan was the starting pitcher for the Bulls. He threw 4.2 innings worth of pitches, surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out five.

Stuart (1-0) was awarded the win. He pitched 4.1 innings striking out seven, allowing two hits and one walk.
