Rattlers Homer Twice but Can’t Fend Off Late USF Rally

Tampa, Fla. | Florida A&M baseball lost in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon, giving up seven runs over the final three innings, losing 9-8 to South Florida.
 
The Rattlers, who held the lead for the majority of the afternoon, cranked three homeruns in the losing effort. Tucker Rayburn and Grant Rowell both went yard.
 
FAMU got on the board quickly, scoring three runs on three hits and one error in the first inning. JD Tease got things started, picking up his first RBI of the year on an RBI single that brought Octavien Moyer around to score. Rowell and Seyjuan Lawrence followed up with RBI singles of their own to give the Rattlers a 3-0 led.
 
In the fourth inning, FAMU head baseball coach Jamey Shoppe was ejected following an 11-minute review that resulted in an USF run that cut the Rattlers' lead to one. FAMU got out of the inning by picking off USF's Julio Cortez at second.  
 
The fifth inning was punctuated by a leadoff solo homerun by Rayburn. Later in the inning, Rowell hit a sacrifice fly that brought Jared in to score. 
 
Octavien Moyer picked up an RBI in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Adam Haidermota to cross home plate. 
 
Rowell added the final Rattler homerun of the afternoon, turning on a fastball and sending it sailing over the left field wall for 2-run shot to give the Rattlers an 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
 
USF went on to score seven runs on their final three at-bats, including a walk-off single by Riley Hogan to lift the Bulls to the 9-8 victory.
 
FAMU banged out a season-high 10 hits. LJ Bryant and Rowell both had multi-hit game for the Rattlers. Rowell went 2-for-3 with four RBI, a homerun and one strikeout, while Bryant went 2-for-4 with two single, two strikeouts and one walk.
 
Josh Barr got the start on the mound for FAMU, working 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out three batters with one walk.
 
Kelyn Fox had a solid day in relief, tallying five strikeouts while giving up four runs on four hits with one walk.
 
Jeremiah McCollum (0-1) was given the loss, allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. 
 
USF's Orion Kerkering got the win.
