LUBBOCK, Tex. (Nov. 18) – The FAMU Women's Basketball team hung tough early before host Texas Tech used a second quarter surge to begin pulling away to a 98-60 win at United Supermarkets Arena here Monday night.
FAMU (1-3) trailed by just three points, 22-19 after the first period, but Tech (2-0) went on a 36-14 run to take control of the game, 58-33 at the half.
The Rattlers outscored Tech, 17-14 in the third period, but the Red Raiders closed out the bout in the fourth, with a 26-10 finishing flurry.
FAMU shot 34.2 percent (25 of 73) to 54.6 percent (36 of 66) for the Red Raiders, who also shot well from distance, splashing 56 percent (14 of 25) of their triples against a 28.6 percent showing (7 of 25) for the Rattlers.
Leading the way for the Rattlers was sophomore forward Jasmine Ballew, who scored 11 points, splashing a trio of three-pointers, to go with three steals.She was aided by Temple, Texas sophomore Jhakya Dilworth, who finished with 10 points, including a pair of triples.
Graduate center Shalunda Burney-Robinson added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while freshman Alaina Rice and junior Kailya Jackson each added six points, while freshman Kayla Mossop pulled down six rebounds.
Texas Tech had four players score in double figures, led by Sydney Goodson with 21 points, including five of eight from distance, to go with five rebounds and five assists. Brittany Brewer turned in a double double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Alexis Tucker and Jo'Nah Johnson each added 17 points.
WHO'S NEXT: FAMU travels to Kissimmee, Florida Friday for a 7:00 p.m. bout against the Suns of Johnson University.
