Baseball completes series sweep of Savannah State

Tallahassee, Fl. (April 22nd, 2018) – After taking games one and two from Savannah State, the Rattlers came into Sunday looking to sweep the series.

              After reaching on an error by the second baseman, Jordan Curtis scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Brian Davis, giving the Rattlers an early 1-0 lead in game three.

              Savannah State took the lead with four runs in the top of the third, as Bryce Luken drove in Mason Calloway with a single through the right side. Jalen Atterbury then hit a three-run homerun down the left field line, driving in Freddie Landers and Bryce Luken to make it a 4-1 game going into the bottom of the third.

              Brian Davis answered with his third homerun of the year in the bottom of the third to put the Rattlers within two, making it a 4-2 game after three innings of play.

              The Tigers extended the lead in the fifth thanks to a single up the middle by Bryce Luken that brought in Freddie Landers to make it a 5-2 game.

              The Rattlers shortened the deficit in the seventh when Jacky Miles drove in Dallas Oliver with a double down the left field line. Willis McDaniel then drove in Miles and Brian Davis with another double down the left field line. Bret Maxwell drove in the go-ahead run, scoring McDaniel with a sacrifice fly to left field. The four-run inning gave the Rattlers a 6-5 lead headed to the eighth.

              FAMU added insurance in the eighth inning thanks to a Dallas Oliver single that scored Ty Russ. Jacky Miles then drove in Oliver with a double to right center, giving the Rattlers an 8-5 lead after eight innings.

              Florida A&M went on to win by a final score of 8-5, sweeping the weekend series. Jamie Grant earned his second win of the season (2-1), throwing 4 innings of scoreless relief. Starting pitcher Dallas Oliver allowed five runs through 5 innings of work while striking out three.

              Tyler Robinson suffered the loss for Savannah State, giving up the go ahead run in the seventh inning. Starter Luis Torres-Lopez went 6 innings, allowing four runs (two earned), while David Sharp and Paul Sheffield each made an appearance out of the bullpen.

              The win puts FAMU at 19-22 on the season and 12-5 in conference play, maintaining first place in the Southern division of the MEAC. The Rattlers will be back at home this Friday, April 27th, as they host the Hornets of Alabama State University in a three-game non-conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
