FAMU Defeats TSU 8-6 in SWAC Tournament Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Rattlers came to Rickwood Field — America's oldest professional baseball park — and they put on a show. Jay Campbell homered to right field. Jordan Brown delivered a two-RBI single with two outs and the game hanging in the balance. Florida A&M erased a two-run seventh-inning deficit and walked off with an 8-6 victory over Texas Southern, improving to 28-22 on the season with a performance the historic ballpark won't forget.

Caleb Granger set the foundation. The right-hander worked six innings of one-run baseball on four hits, navigating threat after threat with poise while Texas Southern starter Justin Mays — who struck out 11 Rattlers — kept the game tight. FAMU built a 4-1 lead through six and put it in the bullpen's hands.

Texas Southern surged for five in the seventh — a Lopez RBI single, a two-run Ruiz single aided by a Figueroa error and a Robinson two-run homer to right-center — turning a comfortable lead into a 6-4 deficit. For a lesser team, the game ends there. The Rattlers answered immediately.

In the bottom of the seventh, Campbell singled and reached second on a throwing error. McKenzie walked. Miller bunted both runners over. Colton Ryals singled home Campbell. Ryals stole second. Texas Southern intentionally walked Figueroa — bringing up Brown with the bases loaded, two outs and the game on the line.

Brown singled to center. Two runs scored. FAMU led 7-6. William Brown followed with a single through the left side to plate Figueroa and make it 8-6. Four runs, four hits, two outs — a statement inning from a team that refuses to blink.

Clark Lincoln worked a clean eighth and Cody Williams closed out the ninth on 13 pitches — three up, three down — earning his sixth save of the season. Tanner Walker, who inherited the five-run seventh and was on the mound when FAMU retook the lead, was credited with the win.

Rattlers will play the winner between Jackson State/Southern on Thursday at 4 p.m. EST on SWAC TV.
