ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 7) – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers took down the MEAC Southern Division's top-seeded Savannah State Tigers to advance to the semifinal round of the MEAC Softball Championship unscathed. The Lady Rattlers scored nine runs on the Tigers, who garnered just three. Kenya Pereira kept the Lady Tiger hitters at bay, while Miesha McBride slammed a homer in the fourth inning, to lead the offensive assault at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The win puts the Lady Rattlers in a winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. against arch-rival Bethune-Cookman.
Pereira, pitched her second full game of the tournament, going seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five. She allowed two walks and gave up one line drive home run to SSU's Antonette Smith in the fifth inning.
FAMU depended on its entire lineup for offense. In the sixth inning, they scored five runs, led by catcher Alexsis Sandage who started the rally. For the Game, McBride was a flawless 4-for-4, while left fielder Tashayla Irvis was 3-for-4. The Lady Rattlers got 13 hits in the game.
