FORT MYERS, FL - Florida A&M rallied from a 3-1 deficit with single runs in the final two frames Sunday, but Florida Gulf Coast got a pinch-hit, RBI single from Zack Tillery in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 4-3 win in the series finale, to earn a three-game series sweep of the Rattlers at Swanson Stadium.
FGCU (13-7) won the series opener Friday night behind a dominating performance by Michael Murray and two relievers who combined to strike out 16 Rattlers in 8-1 victory. FAMU (6-13) jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead in Game 2 of the series Saturday night, but FGCU stormed back with two runs in the third, two more in the fourth, five in the fifth and four more in the seventh, while five Eagles' pitchers combined to strike out 17 in a 15-2 win.
FAMU's Jared Walker went 3-for-5 in Sunday's finale, while teammates Michael Birdsong and Ryan Hutson each went 2-for-4. Hutson had an RBI-double in the eighth, while teammate Ryan Kennedy tied the score at 3-3 with an RBI-single in the 9th before the Eagles managed to plate the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.
FAMU returns home in conference action this weekend against North Carolina Central University. The series will begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and concludes with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
