Wheeler came to FAMU after serving as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program at Daytona State College for the 2021 season. Some of his primary responsibilities included assisting the coaching staff with video operations and scouting. During his time at Daytona, Wheeler helped develop one All-State player, two First Team All-Conference players, 3 Second Team All-Conference players, eight Mid-Florida Conference Scholar-Athletes and one NJCAA Academic All-American. Three players were awarded Division 1 scholarships and two players Division 2 scholarships.
Before Daytona State, Wheeler served as an assistant coach for the boy's basketball program at Windermere High School (FL) and helped the team reach the state final four in the school's second year of existence. His responsibilities included perimeter player development, scouting, and film breakdowns. While there, he saw six players receive basketball scholarships, with two at the Division 1 level.
From 2012-to 2018, Wheeler served six seasons at Olympia High School (FL), where he spent time as an assistant boys coach, girls head coach, and boys head coach. During his tenure there, he helped five players reach the Division 1 level, and 16 players reach their dream of playing basketball at the college level.
Before Olympia High School, Wheeler spent a season as an assistant coach for the nationally-ranked boy's basketball program at Montverde Academy (FL). His duties included skill development, strength & conditioning, video operations, and scouting.Â
Wheeler's experience includes winning the 2008 3A Girls Basketball Florida State Championship as an assistant at Bishop Moore Catholic High School and a 3rd place finish in Oregon 4A Girls Basketball at Jefferson High School in 2007.
Coach Wheeler was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He got his coaching start at Cascade College, where he was the student assistant for the women's basketball team while also participating in the men's basketball program. He is joined by his wife Kiana and his daughter Noa.
