Willie Powers III

Willie Powers III was named the assistant men’s basketball coach at Florida A&M University in July 2019.

Powers, a native of Gainesville, came to FAMU after serving as the director of player development for his alma mater, Georgia Southern University (GSU) from 2017-2019. Priot to GSU, Powers coached within the AAU ranks, serving as as an assistant coach for the Florida Elite 16-U in 2015 and the Gainesville Basketball Club 15-U in 2016. Powers was also the head coach of Thunderstruck 16-U AAU team in 2017. He also served as an assistant coach at P.K. Yonge DRS school (Gainesville) from 2015-2017. 

Powers, a former standout basketball players at GSU, was a Southern Conference All-Freshmen team selection and two-time All-Southern Conference selection for the Eagles. He finished his career with 1,321 points, 460 assists, 359 rebounds and 122 steals. He finished ranked 17th in scoring and fourth in assists on the school’s all-time list in the Division I era.

Following his collegiate playing career, Powers played professionally for BC Prievidza in Slovakia. 

Powers earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Georgia Southern in 2012. Powers has one child, Taylor.
