Kenneth Black

Updated: July 2021

Kenneth “KJ” Black became the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator for the football program at Florida A&M University in 2019. Head coach Willie Simmons elevated Black to co-offensive coordinator following the 2019 season.

In Black's first season with the Rattlers as the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach, the passing game improved immensely. Rattlers saw improvement in passing offense (232.9 YPG in '18 to 291.1 in '19), team passing efficiency (128.6 in '18 to 148.5 in '19), and passing touchdowns (17 in '18 to 30 in '19).

Black played a pivotal role in the improvement of quarterback Ryan Stanley from 2018 to 2019. Stanley threw for more passing yards (2,519 in '18 to 2,566 in '19), more passing touchdowns (17 in '18 to 23 in '19), and fewer interceptions (12 in '18 to 7 in '19) as he would go on to be named the 2019 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Black, born in Jacksonville, but raised in Louisville, Kentucky, spent the 2015-2018 seasons as a full-time assistant coach at his alma mater, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). Black was part of the PVAMU 2009 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship team.

From 2011-14, Black played a key role behind the scenes in the overall success of the Prairie View A&M offense as he helped coach the team’s quarterbacks and tight ends. PVAMU quarterbacks Jerry Lovelocke and De’Auntre Smiley have had career seasons during their tenure under Black as both players have set career and single-season passing records. In addition to his on-field duties, Black helped develop the team’s offensive game plans, assisted in football and video operations along with aiding the coaching staff in whatever roles were needed.

Black transferred to Prairie View A&M from Western Kentucky before the 2009 campaign. After nearly leading the Panthers to a comeback win at New Mexico State, Black was named the starter in game three. The rest was championship history as Black led PVAMU to eight straight wins and the programs’ first SWAC football championship since 1964. Black earned conference Offensive Player of the Year honors after completing more than 70 percent of his passes (162-230) for 2,033 yards with 22 touchdowns and four interceptions while also rushing for four touchdowns.

In his two-year career, Black passed for 4,187 yards and 35 touchdown passes, and just nine interceptions. Black holds several passing records at Prairie View A&M and has also spent time playing professional indoor football.

Black is married to Erin and the couple has one daughter, Peyton Dianne.
