Bryan Henry

Bryan Henry was named the assistant coach/pitching of the baseball program at Florida A&M University in 2015.

Henry, a native of Tallahassee, joined the FAMU staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Florida State University (FSU) in 2014. Henry also served as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball National Team Development Programs with the 14U team in 2014.

At FAMU, Henry has coached nine pitchers who have earned All-MEAC honors, including first-team selections Jeremiah McCollum (2019) and Dylan Carlson (2018).

In his first season in 2015, Henry helped direct the Rattlers to their lowest team ERA (4.71) in program history. The 4.71 team ERA ranked third in the MEAC. It marked the first time in school history FAMU had finished the season with a team ERA below 5.00. The pitching staff also combined to finish with the eighth most single-season strikeouts (284) since 2000, in just 48 games.

Senior, left-handed, pitcher Marcus Roberts set the program record with a 0.89 ERA in 27 appearances and just allowed two earned runs on the year. Five pitchers finished the 2015 season with a sub-3.00 ERA and the staff finished with a 3.28 ERA against conference opponents.

Henry’s 2017 pitching staff was the second in program history to finish with a team ERA below 5.00 at 4.83. Additionally three of Henry’s staffs have finished with team ERA under 4.00 in MEAC play, including a program-best mark of 3.28 in 2015. The 2019 pitching staff also totaled 367 strikeouts, the most during Henry’s tenure.

He was the 2003 Florida Class 2A State Baseball Player of the Year and was selected in the 2003 Major League Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Henry bypassed the Pirates’ offer, playing one season at North Florida Community College before signing at FSU, where he was mentored by then-pitching coach and current FAMU head baseball coach, Jamey Shouppe.

AT FSU, Henry was a first-team All-ACC selection three consecutive seasons at Florida State (2005-07) and the ACC Pitcher of the Year in 2007. He also spent seven seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, including two seasons at the Triple A level, and played for Team USA in 2010. Henry finished with a career record of 32-9 with an ERA of 2.60. His 32 career wins ranked him as ninth on the all-time at FSU, at the time.

Drafted in the 12th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Henry played seven professional seasons in the Diamondbacks’ system. He played two seasons with the Triple-A Reno Aces, helping the team win the 2012 International League championship. In 2010, Henry was a USA Baseball team selectee, playing in the Pan-American qualifier in Puerto Rico where he allowed just one run in six innings.

Henry and his wife, Laura Lee, have two children, Andrew and Brylee.
