High School: Mayes lettered in cross country and track and field at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Fla. She qualified for states all four years she ran track and field. She was a member of the National Honor Society and she received both the coach's achievement award and MVP. Senior year she was the District Champion in the 800 meter.

Personal: Shanay Juanita Mayes was born on June 22, 1992 to Carol Samuels and Tharon Mayes in Toronto, Canada. Carol Mayes ran track and field at Florida State University. She has three siblings, Shyanne, Brianna, and Tyrus Mayes. Mayes is currently majoring in physical education and she enjoys drawing and writing in her spare time.
