Florida A&M Powers Past Edward Waters in exhibition volleyball opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M opened its volleyball exhibition slate with a five-set sweep of Edward Waters on Sunday, winning 25-21, 25-10, 25-16, 25-22, 15-7 at Gaither Gymnasium.

The Rattlers hit .261 as a team on 35 kills against just 11 errors, while limiting Edward Waters to a .067 attack percentage. FAMU also won the block battle, 8-4, and out-dug the Tigers 46-34.

LaDonna Tranthem led all players with 11 kills on 28 attempts for a .357 clip, adding a team-high 14 digs for a near double-double effort. Sydney Whitefield chipped in six kills, 11 digs and a block, while Iyonnie Sanford added six kills on just 12 swings for a .333 percentage.

Setter Makenzie Taylor dished out 15 assists, and Bengisu Kazazlar added six assists to go with six service aces. Brandi Boston hit .571 on five kills in limited action, and Tamia Colemon contributed three kills and three block assists.

Defensively, libero Victoria Santana paced FAMU with 16 digs, and Kelly Kelsick added three digs and four aces from the service line. As a team, the Rattlers served at a .959 clip on their receptions.

FAMU dominated the second set, winning 25-10 while holding Edward Waters to a -.033 hitting percentage.
