TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — William Brown cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Florida A&M erupted for five runs to overcome a 13-10 deficit and stun Bethune-Cookman 15-13 Saturday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
The Rattlers (22-19) trailed by three entering the final two frames but strung together a dramatic rally that turned a raucous crowd of 385 into a frenzy, capping one of the wildest games of the spring season.
"That's a team that refused to quit," could have been the only words necessary to describe a Florida A&M club that found itself behind 13-10 after Bethune-Cookman (31-13) posted a six-run seventh inning to seize what appeared to be a commanding lead.
FAMU answered in the bottom of the eighth.
Matthew Perez singled to center to ignite the rally, and
Josue Figueroa followed with a walk.
Jordan Brown was plunked by a pitch to load the bases and set the stage for Brown's heroics. The sophomore second baseman ripped a double to left field that cleared the bases and knotted the score at 13.
The Wildcats turned to reliever Pablo Torres, but the damage was far from done.
Caden Kresak reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and advanced to second, allowing Brown to race home with the go-ahead run.
Jay Campbell then laced a double to right field to plate Kresak and push the lead to 15-13.
Right-hander
Cody Williams slammed the door over the final two innings, retiring all six batters he faced to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. Williams did not allow a hit or a walk over his two frames of relief, needing just 23 pitches to lock it down.
Kresak paced the FAMU offense with a 3-for-6 afternoon that included a double, a triple and an RBI. Campbell matched him with a 3-for-5 day, collecting a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.
Jackson McKenzie provided early thunder with a two-run homer in the second inning and finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and two walks.
Ethan Miller chipped in two hits, including a two-run double in the first, and drove in three.
Brown finished 1-for-5 at the plate but saved his biggest swing for the moment that mattered most, driving in three with the game-tying double.
Bethune-Cookman jumped ahead early on an Andrey Martinez two-run homer in the top of the first, but FAMU responded with a four-run bottom half keyed by Miller's two-run double and a two-RBI single from
Alex Monile. The Rattlers pushed the lead to 8-4 through three innings before the Wildcats clawed back.
The visitors seized momentum with a six-run seventh highlighted by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, an RBI walk and an RBI groundout, turning a 10-7 deficit into a 13-10 advantage. But FAMU's bullpen — anchored by Williams — and the lineup's refusal to fold proved to be the difference.
Torres (2-2) absorbed the loss after surrendering two inherited runners in a third of an inning of work.
The two teams combined for 28 runs, 23 hits and three errors in a contest that featured 14 walks, six hit batters and 336 total pitches.
