Rattlers Top Hornets in Series Finale and Sweep Hornets

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Jesus Campa was dialed in from the jump, Jay Campbell drove in four runs and Florida A&M completed a series sweep of Alabama State with a 7-2 victory on Sunday at FAMU Baseball Stadium. The Rattlers have now won six straight games, improving to 12-14 overall and claiming the series two games to none at home.

Campa was the engine of the win. The right-hander allowed just three hits and one unearned run over eight innings, striking out six and working through traffic with remarkable composure. He induced 10 groundouts and consistently put Alabama State hitters in defensive counts, not allowing an earned run from the first pitch to the final out of the eighth. The outing was the best start of Campa's season and came at the right time for a Rattler staff that needed a deep, efficient performance.

FAMU grabbed the lead immediately. In the bottom of the first, Justen Crews doubled to left and Campbell followed with an RBI single to center to put the Rattlers on top 1-0. The second inning was where the game truly opened up. After walks to Josh Bell and Josue Figueroa loaded the bases with one out, William Brown was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Crews lifted a sacrifice fly to score another and Campbell delivered again — a run-scoring single to right that pushed two runs home and made it 4-0. Starter Trey Power did not make it out of the second inning, surrendering four earned runs on five hits and three walks across 54 pitches.

Alabama State made things interesting in the third when Niguel Jenkins reached on a Jordan Brown error and scored on a Fabian Santana groundout, but Campa allowed nothing else until he was lifted in the ninth, when Tanner Walker inherited a jam and surrendered a run before closing it out.

Campbell's best moment came in the seventh, with FAMU leading 4-1 and looking to pad the margin. With Brown and Crews both on base, Campbell ripped a triple to center field that cleared the bases and put the Rattlers up 6-1. A Miller groundout plated Campbell to make it 7-1, and the game was effectively over. Campbell finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored, delivering the kind of performance that defines the middle of a winning lineup.

Crews was electric in the two-hole, going 2-for-3 with a double, a sacrifice fly and two runs scored. Brown reached base three times between a hit and a hit by pitch, and Matthew Perez chipped in an RBI single in the big second inning. Miller contributed a run-scoring groundout in the seventh to round out a well-distributed offensive effort.

The sweep gives FAMU back-to-back series wins at home and extends the program's longest winning streak of the season to six. The Rattlers have found their footing at the right time in the conference schedule.
