Rattlers Rout the Hornets

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Garrett Workman was a different pitcher on Saturday afternoon. The left-hander carved through the Alabama State lineup for 7.2 innings, stranding threat after threat and repeatedly leaving Golden Hornets on base while FAMU's offense built a lead that was never truly in doubt. Workman struck out seven, walked one and allowed just one earned run as the Rattlers opened their SWAC home series with a 9-1 victory in front of 352 fans at FAMU Baseball Stadium.

Florida A&M wasted little time taking control. In the bottom of the first against Alabama State starter Esaid Peña, Caden Kresak drew a walk, Matthew Perez singled to center and Jay Campbell singled home the first run. Two batters later, Justen Crews doubled down the right field line to score two more, chasing Peña and sending FAMU to the dugout with a 3-0 lead after one. Peña lasted just one inning, walking three and hitting the strike zone inconsistently throughout his 35-pitch outing.

The Rattlers kept building. Josue Figueroa walked to lead off the fourth and William Brown plated him with a double to left. An RBI groundout from Kresak pushed the margin to 5-0. Then Alex Monile delivered again in the fifth, reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Campbell from third to make it 6-0. FAMU spread the damage across five separate innings, keeping relentless pressure on a Golden Hornet bullpen that cycled through four pitchers on the afternoon.

Workman's performance was the story. His previous starts this season had been inconsistent, but Saturday he was in command from the outset — retiring the first three Golden Hornets in order, picking off a baserunner in the third and inducing two critical double plays when Alabama State threatened. He did not allow an earned run until the eighth, when Cale Clark and Niguel Jenkins singled and Fabian Santana plated one on a groundout. Tanner Walker came on to finish the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Brown was productive throughout, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Campbell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored from the three hole, and Kresak reached base three times to set the table at the top of the order. Crews delivered the big blow early, his two-run double in the first opening the floodgates.

The victory improved Florida A&M to 11-14 overall and continued what has become a strong stretch of baseball for the Rattlers, who have won five of their last six games heading deeper into the conference slate.
