Rattlers Sweep Hornets on Day 2, Claim Series in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Florida A&M University softball clinched a series win over Alabama State on Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader. The Rattlers won the opener 10-9 in 10 innings before dominating the nightcap 6-0, improving to 16-12 on the season.

Game 1: Florida A&M 10, Alabama State 9 (10 innings)

It took 10 innings and more than three hours of action, but the Rattlers found a way to escape Montgomery with a dramatic 10-9 victory in the series opener.
Shortstop Amari Brown was the story of the afternoon, going 4-for-5 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs. The Marianna, Fla., native reached base five times, scored three runs and sparked the offense with her presence up and down the lineup. Brown delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th, plating senior Neriah Lee — who had been placed on second to start the extra frame — and giving FAMU its final margin.

Catcher Keeleigh Spooner contributed two hits including a double and drove in two runs. Lee added a triple and two stolen bases, while Aniya Canty chipped in with a hit, an RBI and a steal as well.

FAMU trailed 4-1 heading into the fourth inning before erupting for five runs — aided by two Alabama State errors — to take a 6-4 lead. The Hornets fought back, tying the game 7-7 in the seventh before FAMU scored twice in the eighth on a Jamison Townsend sacrifice fly and a Brown home run. Alabama State pulled within one heading to the ninth before the Rattlers sealed it in extras.

Samantha Smith earned the win, improving to 6-3 on the season after tossing the final 3.1 innings and allowing two earned runs. Zoryana Hughes and Sariah Espada each saw action in relief before Smith took over. Alabama State's Kohana Pousson (4-6) absorbed the loss.

Game 1 Key Stats — Florida A&M
Amari Brown: 4-5, HR, 2B (2 triples total), 3 RBI, 3 R

Samantha Smith (W, 6-3): 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

Game 2: Florida A&M 6, Alabama State 0

If Game 1 was a grind, Game 2 was a statement. Amari Brown took the circle and delivered a complete-game shutout — seven innings, nine hits allowed, zero runs and just one strikeout — as the Rattlers rolled to a 6-0 victory to complete the sweep.

Brown improved to 2-2 as a pitcher, throwing 100 pitches while inducing 11 groundouts. She also reached base twice at the plate via walks, scoring one run. It was the kind of two-way performance that has become a signature for the senior from Marianna.

Offensively, FAMU struck for three runs in the second inning with two outs — aided by a wild pitch and an Alabama State error — before Spooner led off the fourth with a solo home run, her first of the season. Amya Ramos knocked in two with a double in the fifth to push the lead to 6-0.

Makayla Register drove in two runs in the second inning, and Aniya Canty added an RBI double as part of FAMU's six-hit, six-RBI effort. The Rattlers drew six walks in the game and were held to six hits, but made every one count.

Alabama State starter Amanda Cintron (3-6) lasted just two innings, with the Hornet bullpen cycling through Kaitlyn Hill, Mason Quinnie and Kohana Pousson the rest of the way.
