Rattlers Rally Past Golden Lions in SWAC Battle

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Ethan Miller had seen enough. Down three runs in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, Florida A&M's catcher sent a first-pitch offering over the left field wall for a grand slam, and the Rattlers never looked back. Miller's blast keyed a five-run seventh that powered FAMU to a 7-5 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, giving the Rattlers Game 2 of their SWAC series at Torii Hunter Field.

Florida A&M improved to 8-13 overall with the win. Ryan Young picked up his first career win in relief, and Tanner Walker earned his first save of the season, closing out the final 1.2 innings to preserve the result.

The Rattlers struck first, scratching across two unearned runs in the top of the first on a pair of UAPB errors. Alex Monile grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice and Matthew Perez followed with an RBI bunt, putting FAMU ahead 2-0 before Arkansas-Pine Bluff had recorded an out.

The Golden Lions answered quickly. UAPB erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Blake Coleman's RBI triple, a run-scoring single from Nick Hockemeyer and a Zyon Hamilton triple that led to another run — aided by an error — to make it 4-2. Arkansas-Pine Bluff tacked on another run in the fifth on a Coleman RBI single, pushing its lead to 5-2 heading to the seventh.

Then the Rattlers woke up.

With two outs and the bases loaded — loaded in part by a Perez single, a McKenzie hit and a walk to Jay Campbell — UAPB brought in Jack Hasten (0-3) to relieve starter Kenney Fabian. Josue Figueroa drew a walk to force in a run, and Miller followed with the grand slam, his first of the season, to put FAMU ahead 7-5. The Rattlers had scored five runs on four hits and a walk, sending 10 men to the plate against a rattled Golden Lion bullpen.

Starter Garrett Workman labored through 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits, but kept FAMU close long enough for the offense to catch fire. Young entered in the sixth and retired six of the eight batters he faced, striking out two and allowing no runs. Walker took over in the eighth and finished strong, stranding a pair of Golden Lion baserunners in the final two frames.

Jackson McKenzie went 2-for-4 and scored twice, providing consistent production from the middle of the order. Caden Kresak reached base twice and scored, and Campbell reached three times between a walk and a hit by pitch before coming around to score on Miller's slam.

FAMU out-hustled a Golden Lions squad that collected 12 hits on the afternoon — more than double the Rattlers' five — but left nine runners on base. Two UAPB double plays in the eighth and ninth innings ended any threat of a comeback.
