Florida A&M Eliminates Bethune-Cookman from SWAC Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Ga.  -- The Florida A&M women's basketball team kept Bethune-Cookman to just 12.5 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-16 shooting performance on the way to a 55-52 victory against the Wildcats at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Tuesday.

The Rattlers had two players score in double figures, led by Shaniyah McCarthy, who had 13 points. Miya Giles-Jones added 13 points and two blocks and Breazia Robinson added eight points, eight rebounds and eight blocks.

Led by Robinson's four offensive rebounds, Florida A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points.

Florida A&M's defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 29 percent shooting from the field, including 12.5 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Florida A&M started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run to take an early lead with 7:36 left in the first quarter and entered the quarter break with a 10-8 advantage. Florida A&M capitalized on seven Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

Bethune-Cookman rallied to take a 20-14 lead before Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run starting at the 5:00 mark in the second period to take a 23-20 lead. The Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 23-21 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M scored two of its 13 total points in the period on second chance opportunities created by pulling down one offensive rebounds.

After intermission, Florida A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 41-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.

The Wildcats proceeded to tie things up at 43-43 before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run to seize a 48-43 lead with 5:07 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 55-52 win. Florida A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring three fast break points.
