Florida A&M opens season with thrilling win over Howard

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Florida A&M split its Friday slate at the Campbell Tournament, opening with a dramatic 6-5 win over Howard before falling 12-4 to host Campbell.

At the plate, the Rattlers were paced by junior Jordan Douglas, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple and two RBIs. Junior Makayla Register put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Keeleigh Spooner also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Rattlers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Florida A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Rattlers put runs on the scoreboard once again. Register came across to score the lone run of the inning for Florida A&M, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Rattlers.

Florida A&M kept Howard scoreless before building their lead to 4-2 the following inning.

The Bison then evened up the ballgame at four before Florida A&M fought back to reclaim their advantage in the seventh inning. Samantha Smith and Douglas each scored a run for the Rattlers in the inning, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Florida A&M. Howard put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 6-5 win.

Four Florida A&M players collected at least two hits, but the Rattlers fell to the Campbell Fighting Camels 12-4 Friday.

Zoryana Hughes (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Florida A&M (1-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers were trailing 6-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Florida A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Rattlers deficit grew to 12-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Florida A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning, which tightened the Fighting Camels lead to 12-4. The ballgame ended with that fifth inning rally falling short.
