TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Miya Giles-Jones registered a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Florida A&M women's basketball team over the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers 80-61 at home Thursday.
The Rattlers (6-15, 5-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Giles-Jones, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Shaniyah McCarthy tacked on 18 points and six rebounds and Breazia Robinson chipped in as well with 16 points and six rebounds.
Florida A&M out-rebounded Prairie View A&M 49-40 in Thursday's game, led by Giles-Jones' 15 boards. The Rattlers also pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points.
Florida A&M's defense held Prairie View A&M to only 31.9 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run with 7:57 left in the first quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Prairie View A&M then responded to tie things up at 11-11 heading into the second quarter. Florida A&M took advantage of seven offensive rebounds to score four second chance points out of 11 total in the period
The Rattlers proceeded to outscore the Lady Panthers 23-17 in the second quarter to take a 34-28 halftime lead. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 points close to the basket.
Florida A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 56-48 with two seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
Florida A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Tahnyjia Purifoy's layup, to grow the lead to 70-52 with 4:47 to go in the contest. The Rattlers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 80-61 win. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 18 of its 24 points in the paint.
