MIAMI, Fla. — Florida A&M split a Friday doubleheader at the FIU Tournament, using a five-run first inning to fuel an 8-4 win over Incarnate Word before being held scoreless in an 8-0 loss to host Florida International later in the day.
Game 1: Florida A&M 8, Incarnate Word 4
The Rattlers (6-4) set the tone early with one of their most productive innings of the season. After falling behind 1-0, Florida A&M's offense erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by
Keeleigh Spooner's grand slam that immediately swung momentum and put the Rattlers in control.
Spooner delivered one of the top performances of the weekend, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and a walk while driving in five of Florida A&M's eight runs. The veteran catcher/utility provided the big hit and the insurance, consistently putting pressure on the defense every time she stepped in.
Florida A&M continued to add on as the game progressed, answering every push with response runs. The Rattlers extended the lead in the third inning with two more runs, including a solo home run from
Samantha Smith. Smith went 1-for-3 with the long ball and two RBIs, contributing in both the circle and at the plate in a complete two-way effort.
Jordan Douglas chipped in with a double and a walk, helping keep innings alive and giving Florida A&M extra traffic on the bases. Overall, the Rattlers capitalized when opportunities presented themselves, scoring eight runs on a mix of extra-base hits, plate discipline, and early-inning execution. Florida A&M also drew four walks and went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
In the circle, Smith (2-0) earned the win, working six innings and battling through traffic to keep Florida A&M out front. She allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Zoryana Hughes finished the job with a clean, scoreless inning in relief, striking out one.
Game 2: Florida International 8, Florida A&M 0
In the nightcap, Florida A&M (6-5) couldn't find the same rhythm offensively and struggled to string together quality at-bats. The Rattlers were limited to a few base runners and never advanced anyone beyond second base.
Michaela Fernandez reached scoring position in the fifth inning, giving Florida A&M a brief opening, but Florida A&M finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and couldn't deliver the hit needed to get on the board.
Kiara Beltre provided a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-2 to account for most of Florida A&M's offensive production in the game.
Zoryana Hughes (2-3) started in the circle and took the loss.
