Defensive effort leads Florida A&M over Mississippi Valley State 62-48

ITTA BENA, Miss.  -- The Florida A&M men's basketball team held Mississippi Valley State to just 20 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 62-48 win over the Delta Devils on the road Monday.

The Rattlers (7-9, 4-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Jaquan Sanders, who had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. Micah Octave added 13 points and Anquan Boldin Jr. chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench.

Florida A&M grabbed 44 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 27, led by nine boards from Antonio Baker. The Rattlers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 12 second chance points.

Florida A&M's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 31.5 percent from the field. The Rattlers also limited Michael James to 1-of-9 shooting from downtown in the game. The Delta Devils did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while Florida A&M cleared 33 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run with 15:39 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Octave, to increase its lead to 13-2. The Rattlers then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-17 advantage. Florida A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 35 points.

The Rattlers then held on for the victory in the second half. Florida A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 27 points in the lane.
