PINE BLUFF, Ark. --The Florida A&M women's basketball team went into halftime beating UAPB 31-22, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 63-53 to the Golden Lions on the road Saturday.
The Rattlers (4-12, 3-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Shaniyah McCarthy, who had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Camille Jackson tacked on 12 points, four assists and three steals and Miya Giles-Jones added eight points and six rebounds.
Giles-Jones pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.
The Florida A&M defense held UAPB shooters to just 40 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 11-7 advantage, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 4:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Giles-Jones, to increase its lead to 16-7. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-11 advantage. Florida A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
Florida A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:40 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Breazia Robinson, to increase its lead to 26-15. The Golden Lions cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 31-22 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
Florida A&M then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Golden Lions 46-45 entering the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 14 points in the paint.
Florida A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 63-53. Florida A&M took advantage of four UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of those takeaways.
