Friday Fast 5 Keys to Beat Albany State

9/12/2025 5:28:00 PM

Florida A&M hosts Albany State on Saturday, September 13 at 7 p.m. The match-up is being broadcast on SWAC TV at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

1. Rattler Defense Controls the Trenches
Albany may be piling up rushing yards against lesser competition, but FAMU's defense is built different. With Jason Riles Jr. flying to the ball (team-high 16 tackles) and James Gardner Jr. plugging holes, Albany's ground game won't look nearly as explosive in Bragg.

2. Camon and Kinsler Bring the Heat
The Rams haven't seen a pass rush like FAMU's. Antonio Camon (3 TFL, 2 sacks) is living in the backfield, and Latarie Kinsler is a proven edge threat with sack and QB hurries already. Add in pressure from Brian Norris and Jalik Thomas in coverage, and Albany's quarterback will be uncomfortable all afternoon.

3. Playmakers Everywhere
FAMU has weapons all over the field. Jordan Edwards showed he can score from anywhere with a 65-yard TD grab, Jalen Rogers is a versatile threat as a receiver and returner, and Thad Franklin Jr. is pounding out nearly 50 yards per game on the ground. The Rams' defense hasn't faced this level of balanced talent.

4. Special Teams Advantage: Rattlers Own the Kicking Game
FAMU has the better specialists. Daniel Porto is drilling long field goals and booming kickoffs past the 60-yard mark, while punter Bobby Engstler is flipping the field with a 45-yard average. With strong coverage units, the Rattlers can neutralize Albany's return game and tilt field position in their favor.

5. Turn Drives into Touchdowns
The only thing missing so far has been finishing in the red zone. That changes now. FAMU has moved the ball (over 280 yards per game) and with playmakers stepping up, those field goals turn into six. Meanwhile, the Rattler defense — led by Ah'Mare Lee in the secondary and Justin Bostic making plays all over — is built to hold Albany to three instead of seven.
