TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --The Florida A&M Rattlers broke through after a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning to beat the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 8-4 Saturday.
Senior Jesus Campa (2-2) got the win for FAMU. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out three. Senior Cody Williams also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
At the plate, the Rattlers were led by junior William Brown, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Broedy Poppell put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Senior Colton Ryals also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Rattlers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Florida A&M got an RBI single from freshman Jay Campbell, scoring Poppell from third base.
The Bulldogs broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the sixth inning, when the Rattlers got back on the scoreboard. Florida A&M picked up a run on Brown's leadoff home run off of sophomore Raymond Clar, which evened the score at 2-2.
That 2-2 tie turned into an 8-2 Florida A&M lead in the seventh. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a one-run groundout off the bat of freshman Matthew Perez. Alabama A&M put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Florida A&M still coasted to the 8-4 win.
