TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida A&M women's basketball will open SWAC play at home against rival Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon. The Rattlers wrapped up their non-conference schedule last week with a dominant 111-45 victory over Thomas University, finishing with a 3-8 record in non-conference play.
Cheyenne McEvans leads FAMU in scoring (14.1 points per game, 1st in the SWAC), shooting 46.4% from the field and 44.1% from three-point range. The Rattlers have also gotten solid play from Sydney Hendrix, who averages 11.9 points on 45.8% shooting and leads the team in rebounds (7.2 rebounds per game).
The Wildcats enter the game after finishing the non-conference season with a 3-9 record with wins over Fort Lauderdale, Trinity, and South Alabama.
The Wildcats showcase a strong defensive presence, ranking third in the SWAC in scoring defense, allowing just 65.7 points per game. Their opponent's field goal percentage is the best in the SWAC at 39.5%, making them a tough team to score against. The Wildcats are led by Asianae Nicholson, who leads the team in scoring (11.3 points per) and rebounds (10.4 rebounds per game, 1st in the SWAC). Karianna Woods facilitates the offense with a team-best 25 assists.
The key for FAMU is to focus on maintaining their offensive efficiency against Bethune-Cookman's strong defense while controlling the boards to limit second-chance points. Defensive intensity will be key to disrupting the Wildcats' inside presence and perimeter shooting, and the Rattlers should capitalize on their momentum and home-court advantage to dictate the game's pace.
The Rattlers and Wildcats renew their rivalry on Saturday. The teams split last season's matchups, each winning at home, setting the stage for another competitive showdown to open SWAC play.
The Rattlers will look to get their first conference win. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Alfred Lawson Center.
