Rattlers comeback to beat Alcorn 65-64

LORMAN, Miss. — Florida A&M staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Alcorn State 65-64 on the road, overcoming a 12-point halftime deficit to improve to 6-11 (3-3) on the season.

The comeback story began to take shape midway through the second half. Trailing 49-38 with 12:42 remaining, the Rattlers found their rhythm behind Sterling Young and Milton Matthews' hot shooting. Young, who finished with 19 points, began attacking from beyond the arc, while Matthews (16 points) provided crucial perimeter support.

The turning point came during a pivotal stretch starting around the 8-minute mark. Young knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 53-44, followed by another three shortly after to make it 53-47. The Rattlers' defense intensified, forcing Alcorn into tough shots and creating transition opportunities.

With 5:26 remaining, Young hit another clutch three-pointer to give FAMU their first lead at 57-55, completing a 13-point run that transformed the game. Jamine Charles (10 points, seven rebounds) and Roderick Coffee III (seven points, 10 rebounds) controlled the glass during this stretch, limiting Alcorn to one-shot possessions while creating second chances for FAMU.

The final minutes were intense. Matthews delivered a crucial three-pointer with 3:37 left to maintain FAMU's slim lead. The Rattlers' defense, which held Alcorn to just 24% shooting in the second half, made several key stops down the stretch. Most notably, they forced Alcorn into a missed shot in the final seconds to preserve their one-point victory.

The win showcased FAMU's resilience and defensive prowess. After going 0-for-12 from three-point range in the first half, the team's remarkable 9-of-14 (64.3%) three-point shooting in the second half proved decisive. They also dominated the boards, securing 19 offensive rebounds that led to 17 crucial second-chance points.

The Rattlers are headed to play Jackson State on Monday, January 27.
