Rattlers set to host Delta Devils on MLK Day

1/19/2025 7:35:00 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– The Florida A&M Rattlers (4-11, 1-3 SWAC) look to build on their momentum as they host the struggling Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (2-16, 0-5 SWAC) on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Al Lawson Center. The Rattlers are coming off an impressive 86-76 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, snapping a three-game conference losing streak.

FAMU's offense has found its rhythm behind the strong play of Sterling Young, who is averaging 20.3 points while shooting 50% from the field in conference play. The senior guard has been particularly effective from beyond the arc, connecting on 44.8% of his three-point attempts against SWAC opponents. Milton Matthews also scored consistently, averaging 16.0 points in conference games.

The Delta Devils enter Monday's contest losing seven straight games, most recently falling 83-58 at Bethune-Cookman. MVSU has struggled mightily on both ends of the floor, ranking last in the SWAC in scoring offense (53.5 ppg) and near the bottom in scoring defense (84.2 ppg). The Delta Devils are led by Alvin Stredic (10.5 ppg) and Arthur Tate (10.1 ppg).

This matchup could allow FAMU to improve their offensive efficiency, as MVSU allows opponents to shoot 51.2% from the field. The Rattlers will look to take advantage of their superior three-point shooting (34.1%, best in SWAC) against a Delta Devils defense allowing 37.4% from beyond the arc.

Keys for FAMU:
- Continue the strong offensive balance that produced 86 points in their last outing
- Capitalize on MVSU's turnover problems (16.6 per game)
- Maintain defensive intensity against a struggling MVSU offense
- Control the boards, where the Delta Devils are being outrebounded by 9.6 per game

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Eastern at the Al Lawson Center, where the Rattlers are 4-1 this season. Tickets may be purchased at famuathletics.com/tickets.
