Rattlers fall to Southern, drop to 0-2 in SWAC

BATON ROUGE, La. –– Florida A&M struggled against Southern University, falling 91-57 in a SWAC conference matchup in Baton Rouge. The Rattlers (3-10, 0-2 SWAC) could not overcome a difficult first half where they fell behind 53-26 at the break.

Sterling Young led the Rattlers with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including three 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Southern's balanced attack. The Jaguars (8-8, 3-0 SWAC) had six players score double figures and shot an efficient 53.2% from the field.

FAMU had trouble containing Southern's bench, which outscored the Rattlers' reserves 60-17. The Jaguars also dominated the glass, outrebounding FAMU 34-25, and converted those extra possessions into 19 second-chance points.

Jamine Charles added 7 points on efficient 3-of-4 shooting for the Rattlers, while Shaqir O'Neal contributed 6 points and three rebounds. Milton Matthews and Saiyd Burnside also chipped in 6 points each.

The Rattlers struggled with ball security, committing 15 turnovers, which Southern converted into 24 points. FAMU shot 40% from the field and 26.3% from three.

Southern took control early and steadily built their lead throughout the first half, using an 11-0 run midway through the period to push the advantage to double digits. The Rattlers could not mount a significant comeback in the second half as Southern maintained their comfortable margin.

The loss drops Florida A&M to 0-2 in SWAC play as they travel to Grambling to play the Tigers on Monday.
