Rattlers Look to Build Momentum in SWAC Play Against Southern

1/10/2025 4:57:00 PM

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Florida A&M Rattlers (4-8) head to Louisiana to take on Southern University as they continue Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play in women's basketball.

The Rattlers are aiming to build momentum in Southwestern Athletic Conference play after opening with a 62-54 victory over Bethune-Cookman. FAMU hopes to turn that success into a win streak as they hit the road for their next matchup.

Cheyenne McEvans leads FAMU in scoring (14.9 points per game, 1st in the SWAC), shooting 47.6% from the field and 40% from three-point range. The Rattlers have also gotten solid play from Sydney Hendrix, who averages 11.6 points on 45.6% shooting and leads the team in rebounds (7.2 rebounds per game).

Southern University enters the matchup with a 4-12 overall record and a 2-1 mark in SWAC play. The Jaguars opened their conference play with a victory against Prairie View A&M but fell to Texas Southern on the road. However, in their most recent outing, they bounced back with a 73-56 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Offensively, the Jaguars average 56.7 points per game while shooting 36.3% from the field and 27.2% from beyond the arc. They lead the conference in ball security, committing just 15.6 turnovers per game. Senior guard Aniya Gourdine is the team's top scorer, averaging 11.4 points per game while shooting 37.7% from the field and 26.8% from three-point range.

The key to the game for FAMU is to capitalize on Southern's offensive inconsistencies, force turnovers with strong defense, dominate the boards, and limit their own turnovers. FAMU should focus on efficient scoring, prioritize high-percentage shots, and control the tempo to minimize Southern's fast-break opportunities and maintain control throughout the game.
The Rattlers will look to get their another conference win. Tip off is set for 3:30 p.m. at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
