BATON ROUGE, LA --The Florida A&M women's basketball team took a 52-49 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 67-61 to the Southern Jaguars on the road Monday.
The Rattlers (8-20, 7-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Sydney Hendrix, who had 14 points. Ahriahna Grizzle tacked on 14 points and Nashani Gilbert added nine points and nine rebounds.
The Florida A&M defense held Southern shooters to only 37.9 percent from the field, including 30 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-5, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 6:29 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Olivia Delancy, to take a 10-7 lead. The Rattlers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-15 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Rattlers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-33.
Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-37 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Grizzle, to grab a 43-40 lead with 4:22 to go in the third. The Rattlers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-49 edge. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
Southern then erased the Florida A&M lead in the game's final quarter for a 67-61 comeback victory. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its nine points in the paint.
