Rattlers host Jacksonville during Alumni Weekend on Veronica Wiggins Field

3/1/2024 2:51:00 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– Florida A&M softball is set to play its first games this weekend on the newly named Veronica Wiggins Field as they host the Jacksonville Dolphins.

Prior to the game, the Rattlers will honor legendary Head Coach Veronica Wiggins with a field naming ceremony scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on the courts at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex. There will also be a ribbon-cutting right before the game's first pitch.

The Rattlers enter the weekend after picking up their first two wins of the season, beating Alcorn State and Southern in the HBCU Celebration Classic. Pitcher Zoryana Hughes had an excellent weekend, and she went on to be named the SWAC Pitcher of the Week, picking up a win and a save while striking out nine batters in 9.1 innings.

The Dolphins enter the weekend on a two-game winning streak and will be on the road for the second time this season with their solo away game at Florida. The Dolphins enter the game with one of the nation's top defenses as they are ranked in the top 65 in three defensive categories: ERA (59th, 2.33), shutouts (48th, 3), and walks (62nd, 47). Offensively, the Dolphins excel at hitting doubles and stealing bases. The Dolphins ranked 89th in doubles with 18 and 59th in stolen bases with 22.

In anticipation of an increased number of fans for Saturday's field naming ceremony & softball doubleheader game, fans are encouraged to bring chairs with them to the games to sit on the hill overlooking the field.
