Speer scores 22 points in Florida A&M's 73-61 loss to Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Jalen Speer totaled 22 points, but the Florida A&M men's basketball team fell to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 73-61 on the road Saturday.

Speer added six assists to his 22 point game to lead the Rattlers (4-15, 2-6). Shannon Grant helped out with 12 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Chatman chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and three steals coming off the bench.

Florida A&M took advantage of great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 15 assists on 24 made field goals. Speer's six assists led the distribution list for the Rattlers and K'Jei Parker also added five assists of his own.

The Florida A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Alabama A&M turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Chatman's three steals led the way individually for the Rattlers.

How It Happened

After playing to an 18-18 tie, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 8:00 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Speer, to take a 23-18 lead. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-30 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 34 points close to the basket.

Alabama A&M proceeded to take a 64-48 lead before Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-55 with 5:29 to go in the contest. Alabama A&M responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-61. Florida A&M capitalized on six Alabama A&M turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
