TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– The Florida A&M women's basketball team shot 57.1 percent from three-point range, but fell to the Howard Bison 78-66 at home Monday.
The Rattlers (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by D'Mya Griffin, who had 19 points. Saige Glover tacked on 14 points and seven rebounds from the bench and Sydney Hendrix helped out with a double-double from the bench with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Florida A&M out-rebounded Howard 39-33 in Monday's game, led by 10 boards from Hendrix. The Rattlers also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second chance points.
Florida A&M forced 22 Howard turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Tahnyjia Purifoy's six steals led the way for Florida A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-10, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 4:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hendrix, to take a 15-12 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 25-23.
Howard kept adding to that lead, building a 32-25 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Olivia Delancy, to tie the game at 32. Howard then took control, putting the Rattlers at a 47-37 disadvantage heading into halftime.
Howard continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 53-40 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Griffin, to trim its deficit to 53-49 with 4:52 to go in the third. Howard countered and stretched its lead to 62-56 heading into the fourth. Florida A&M took advantage of nine Howard turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.
Howard kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-56 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Purifoy's three, to shrink the deficit to 64-62 with 4:23 to go in the contest. Howard responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-66. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
