Volleyball Preview: SWAC Tournament

Quarterfinal action begins Friday at 12 p.m. ET.

What: 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Volleyball Tournament
Where: Grambling State University | Hobdy Assembly Center
When: Friday, Nov. 22 - Sunday, Nov. 24
 
SWAC Tournament
With an unblemished conference record of 16-0, Florida A&M secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SWAC Volleyball Tournament (Nov. 22-24). 
 
The Rattlers will take on the tournament host Grambling State Friday at 11 a.m. CT / 12 p.m. ET. The winner of the match will go on to face the winner of No. 4 Bethune-Cookman/No. 5 Texas Southern on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET. 
 
The championship match is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT / 3:30 p.m. ET. 
 
Quarterfinals and semifinals matches will be available live on the SWAC Digital Network.
 
Quick Hits
  • In 2023, Florida A&M reached the SWAC championship match for the third consecutive season but fell short of a three-peat, losing 3-0 to Jackson State. The Rattlers won the tournament title in 2021 and 2022. 
  • With a perfect 16-0 record, Florida A&M earned the 2024 regular season title. However, this isn't the first time the team posted a perfect conference record – in recent history, FAMU finished 10-0 in the MEAC in 2012, 2013, and 2016. 
  • The Rattlers, currently 24-6, have secured their third 20-win season under head coach Gokhan Yilmaz; the team finished 25-7 in 2021 and 21-13 in 2022. 
  • FAMU is one of nine teams in the nation currently unbeaten in conference play.
  • The Rattlers are also finished the regular season unbeaten at home (13-0).
  • They've recorded 17 straight-set wins this year, including 12 against SWAC opponents.
 
Career Highlights … So Far
  • Isis Williams has recorded 280 career blocks in four seasons with FAMU and ranks ninth all-time in the category. She is the first Rattler to crack the 'Top 10' since 1999. Irma McClendon (1987-90) and Kim Funchess (1985-88) currently sit seventh and eighth all-time, respectively, with 287 and 283 total blocks. 
  • Brooke Lynn Watts has amassed 1,024 kills in three seasons at FAMU and currently ranks eighth all-time on the Rattlers' career list. Brandi Charleston (1993-96) ranks seventh all-time with 1,026. 
  • Chasing 1K: Brookelynn Thomas has accumulated 986 career kills over her five-year career.
  • Gokhan Yilmaz recorded his 100th victory as head coach at Florida A&M in the 3-0 win against Alcorn (Oct. 14). Over his seven-year coaching career, Yilmaz holds an overall record of 126-94, with a 109-74 record at FAMU.
