Rattlers open up SWAC play on the road against rival Bethune-Cookman

Daytona Beach, FL - Florida A&M women's basketball will open SWAC play on the road against rival Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon. The Rattlers closed out their non-conference slate last week against North Florida. The Rattlers lost to the Osprey's 76-71 in overtime.

Non-conference Recap

The Rattlers have been tested early this season with a tough non-conference slate. The Rattlers opened up the season on the road against the University of Tennessee, losing to the Lady Vols 93-64. The Rattlers stayed in Tennessee for their matchup against Middle Tennessee, where they suffered a 93-48 loss. 

The Rattlers returned to the Sunshine State for their matchup against Florida. The Rattlers would fall to the Gators 92-54. The Rattlers picked up their first win of the season against Jacksonville. 

The Rattlers then traveled to Texas to take on Sam Houston - FAMU fell to the Bearkats 65-62. The Rattlers then wrapped up the road trip at the University of Houston, where they lost to the Courgars 79-59. The Rattlers returned home for a matchup against South Alabama, falling to the Panthers 68-65.

Ahriahna Grizzle was named SWAC Impact Player of the Week for her performance against North Florida. Grizzle racked up a season-high 31 points, four assists, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats

The Wildcats enter the game after finishing the non-conference season with a 9-4 record with wins over Iona, Georgia State, Bradley, Trinity Baptist, and Mercer.

The Wildcats defense will be a challenge for the Rattlers, as they rank 5th in the nation and 2nd in the SWAC in steals per game (13.5). The two primary players on the defensive side of the ball forcing these turnovers are Kerrighan Dunn (2nd in the SWAC with 2.7 steals per game) and D'Shantae Edwards (4th in the SWAC with 2.3 steals per game).


Offensively, the Wildcats are led by Chanel Wilson who leads the team in scoring (13.1 per game), assists, (3.7 per game), and three point attempts (5.2). The Wildcats also do a great job grabbing offensive rebounds, as they rank 3rd in the SWAC in with 15.8 per game. Center Kayla White leads the Wildcats in total rebound with 8.1 per game.
