The Two-Time Defending SWAC Champs Welcome Alabama State, Alabama A&M

Florida A&M will begin league play with a pair of home matches.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Florida A&M, the two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference volleyball champions, will begin league play this week with Alabama State and Alabama A&M visiting the Al Lawson Center. 

Friday, Sept. 22
vs. Alabama State | 6 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 23
vs. Alabama A&M | 3 p.m.

Live stats will be available for both matches; Friday's match versus Alabama State, a reprise of the 2022 SWAC title game, will also be live streamed on Rattlers+. 

The Last Outing
The Rattlers begin SWAC play having won two of their last three matches; the team took on The Citadel, Charleston Southern, and South Carolina State (Sept. 15-16) in the Buccaneer Invitational and left with a 3-1 victory over CSU and a straight-set success over SCSU. 
  • The decision versus South Carolina State captured FAMU's first sweep of the season 
  • Shelby Chamblin finished the weekend with a team-high 39 kills with 30 digs; she notched her first career double-double in the 3-2 loss to The Citadel (22 kills / 11 digs) – the offensive numbers rank second most in the SWAC this season 
  • Brooke Hudson recorded a game-high 30 digs against The Citadel, the second most recorded in the SWAC this year 
  • Camila De La Rosa contributed 106 assists and 19 digs. Her 42 versus the Bulldogs tie for second in the SWAC in a five-set match, while the 40 tallied against CSU ranks fourth in four-set matches

Individually, Brooke Hudson guides the SWAC and sits 13th in the nation in digs per set (5.22). The Preseason Libero of the Year also ranks fifth in the NCAA in total digs (256). Brooke Lynn Watts, the Preseason Player of the Year, paces the conference in kills per set (3.41) and attacks per set (9.70). 

Recapping Another Historic Season 
  • Florida A&M claimed its second Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament title in a 3-0 victory over the top-seed, Alabama State – the two were crowned co-regular season champions with mirror 15-1 conference records
  • The team finished the 2022 season 21-13 overall, further highlighted by a 12-match winning spell and 15 straight-set victories 
  • Head coach Gokhan Yilmaz compiled 17 victories at Charlotte (2014-15) and currently manages 71 at the helm of FAMU; Yilmaz enters his sixth season having coached Florida A&M to back-to-back 20-win seasons with a pair of SWAC titles 
  • FAMU swept conference accolades with the Player of the Year (Dominique Washington), Setter of the Year (Irem Ucar), Libero of the Year (Brooke Hudson), and Newcomer of the Year (Brooke Lynn Watts)
