TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M Rattlers fell 9-7 in a 12-inning marathon matchup to the Alabama State Hornets Saturday.
Junior Tre Simmons (1-2) came out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (24-27, ) and took the loss. Senior Zach Morea was a bright spot for the Rattlers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
Senior Janmikell Bastardo led the way offensively for the Rattlers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Senior Jared Weber put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Freshman Joseph Pierini also helped out, going 1-for-5 for Florida A&M with a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Florida A&M plated two runs when Bastardo left the yard with Weber aboard.
The Rattlers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 5-2. The Florida A&M offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of freshman Ben Kim, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Rattlers.
Florida A&M's lead had evaporated by the time the eighth inning arrived and turned into a 7-6 Alabama State advantage, when the Rattlers tied up the game at seven. The Rattlers recorded a run on Weber's one-out RBI double. Alabama State then scored two times over the remaining four innings to break the tie and grab the 9-7 win.
