MONTGOMERY, Ala. --Freshman Omar Melendez and freshman Luis Rodriguez combined to toss a shutout on Friday as the Alabama State Hornets blanked the Florida A&M Rattlers 1-0.
Senior Hunter Viets (5-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Florida A&M (21-19, 15-4). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Senior Zach Morea was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.
Junior Ty Jackson led the way offensively for the Rattlers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame. Freshman Joseph Pierini furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida A&M managed zero chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Rattlers last got a runner on third in the eighth, when Pierini made it 90 feet away from scoring with one out.
