Early Lead Slips Away at AAM

The Rattlers' volleyball team commanded an early 2-0 decision in their 3-2 setback at AAM.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Florida A&M volleyball team commanded an early 2-0 lead at Alabama A&M Saturday (Oct. 21), but the home team claimed the final three sets: 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 19-25, 13-15.

Brooke Lynn Watts and Emerald Jacobs finished with 15 and 10 kills, respectively, and Jacobs was a dig shy of a double-double. Camila De La Rosa contributed 34 assists and 16 digs.

How It Happened

SET ONE | FAMU dominated the scoreboard the entire first set, leading the Bulldogs from start to finish. An ace from Watts further padded the Rattlers' advantage (13-8), and they went on to outscore their opponent, 8-5, to conclude the stanza.

SET TWO | The Rattlers kicked off the second frame with back-to-back kills by Watts and Iyonnie Sanford; the sides traded leads shortly thereafter, but an AAM attacking error helped put FAMU firmly on top. The visitors held their largest lead at 22-13. However, the Bulldogs narrowed their deficit with an 11-2 run. FAMU sat at set point for five possessions before a Milana Thornton kill and Brooke Hudson service ace concluded the frame.

SET THREE | The Rattlers held a 5-3 edge before yielding four straight points to AAM. They regained their advantage with a 6-1 rally, catalyzed by another Thornton kill. Still, back-and-forth scoring knotted things at 15, 16, and 17-all. AAM was able to gain separation with three unanswered kills.

SET FOUR | There were six ties in the fourth, the final at 17-17, before Alabama A&M worked a 7-0 run.

SET FIVE | The contentious fifth set captured six stalemates, the last at 13-all.
