Defensive effort not enough as Florida A&M falls to Southern 55-49

BATON ROUGE, LA --The Florida A&M women's basketball team held Southern to just 20 percent from deep in a 3-for-15 shooting performance, but fell 55-49 to the Lady Jaguars on the road Saturday.

The Rattlers (2-11, 0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Dylan Horton, who had 16 points and two steals. Skylar Baltezegar added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Ahriahna Grizzle added nine points, six rebounds and three steals.

Baltezegar pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into 15 second chance points.

The Florida A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 22 Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Grizzle's three steals led the way individually for the Rattlers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 6-0, Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run with 7:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Baltezegar, to take a 7-6 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-10.

Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 26-16 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Horton, to narrow its deficit to 26-21, a score that would hold until halftime.

Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 41-29 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 41-34 with 59 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Florida A&M turned two offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 13 total points in the quarter.

Southern kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 50-40 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 50-47 with 59 seconds to go in the contest. Southern responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 55-49. Florida A&M took advantage of seven Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
