BATON ROUGE, La. –– The Florida A&M men's basketball team got a 35-point showing from the bench, but fell 84-66 to the Southern Jaguars on the road Saturday.
The Rattlers (2-11, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Dimingus Stevens, who had 23 points. Jordan Tillmon tacked on 15 points and four assists and Jaylen Bates helped out with 10 points.
The Florida A&M offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in 11 threes on 23 attempts. Stevens was the most prolific shooter for the Rattlers, draining six treys in the contest.
Florida A&M forced 15 Southern turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Byron Smith led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-19, Florida A&M went on an 8-0 run with 2:54 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Noah Meren, to take a 27-26 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Florida A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 27 points.
Southern proceeded to take an 81-59 lead before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 81-64 with 32 seconds to go in the contest. Southern responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 84-66. Florida A&M shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 39 points.
