Rattler VB Opens SWAC Schedule with Success

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Not only did Florida A&M volleyball secure its first Southwestern Athletic Conference win of the season Friday (Sept. 23), the straight set decision also spoiled Bethune-Cookman's home-opener.

Florida A&M 3, Bethune-Cookman 0 (25-16,25-15, 25-18)

FAMU opened SWAC play with the very first point of the evening, and the early edge quickly steamrolled into a 7-2 advantage. Four different Rattlers contributed to the score, and when BC-U evened things at 10-10, the team relied on the same individuals to push back ahead. Brooke Lynn Watts recorded four points in FAMU's 7-2 rally, and it remained in front for the 25-16 set win.

The Rattlers had to overcome a bit of adversity to claim the second set, a 10-6 deficit stood in their way early, but the difference was short lived. There were ties at 13, 14, and 15 before FAMU embarked on an impressive 10-0 stretch to conclude the set, and while the scoreboard captured 10 ties in the third frame alone, Watts' service ace provided the go-ahead score. The sophomore transfer finished with a double-double on a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs while Dominique Washington respectively added 11 and 14.

The team is back in Al Lawson Center Wednesday (Sept. 28) against North Florida. Match time is at 6 p.m.
