FAMU VB Drops Matches to EKU, USA

9/16/2022 8:55:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. | The Florida A&M volleyball team concluded its final non-conference tournament with a pair of 3-1 losses to Eastern Kentucky and South Alabama Friday (Sept. 16).

EKU 3, FAMU 1 (25-17, 25-20, 13-25, 25-21)
The points were roughly even, 62-61, as were the kills, 49-48. But the errors told another story. The Rattlers committed nine more miscues than Eastern Kentucky, and it was enough to settle the 3-1 victory for the opposition.

The first and third sets were a bit lopsided. FAMU was outscored 25-17 to start the match, but responded with a 25-13 win in the penultimate frame. It was the fewest points allowed in a single set this season. After Irem Ucar's service ace, the Rattlers possessed a double-digit edge at 15-5, and action concluded with a set-best .269 hitting percentage.

FAMU never led the fourth frame but pieced together quite a few rallies. The team held off set point on five different occasions, which forced an EKU timeout, and the Colonels recorded the final kill shortly thereafter.

Dominique Washington and Brooke Lynn Watts each recorded double-digit kills, 12 and 10, respectively, and the former also added a double-double with a team-high 13 digs. Kalia Todd notched four total blocks, and Ucar had 35 assists and 10 digs.

USA 3, FAMU 1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23)
The Rattlers led the opening set from start to finish but ran up against a bit of trouble the rest of the way. There were plenty of chances --- they pulled within a point, 15-14, in the third and held a 6-5 advantage in the early goings of the fourth -- and USA quelled each attempt.

It was a tied match at 23-all before the home team cemented its win on back-to-back kills.

Watts led the Rattlers with a team-high 16 points (13 kills, two service aces and two assisted blocks).

FAMU returns to the Al Lawson Center Sunday in a 2 p.m. match against UAB.
