Florida A&M falls to Sam Houston 70-62 after halftime lead

TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M women's basketball team went into halftime beating Sam Houston 37-33, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 70-62 to the Bearkats at home Saturday.

The Rattlers (1-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Dylan Horton, who had 18 points and two steals. Ahriahna Grizzle tacked on 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Eliya Ellis added six points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Led by Ellis' two offensive rebounds, Florida A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.

Florida A&M did a great job disrupting Sam Houston shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. Ellis' three rejections led the way individually for the Rattlers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-2, Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run with 7:30 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Grizzle, to take a 9-4 lead. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-16 advantage. Florida A&M got out and ran in the period, scoring four points on the break.

Sam Houston fought back to tie the game at 26-26 before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run starting at the 4:39 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Horton, to take a 31-26 lead. The Bearkats cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 37-33 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M forced six Sam Houston turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.

Florida A&M then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Bearkats 59-54 entering the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.

Florida A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 70-62. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
