Tallahassee, Fla. | Florida A&M softball earned its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory on Sunday, defeating North Carolina Central 6-4 in the second game on Sunday's doubleheader. The Rattlers dropped game one 5-4.
Game 1
FAMU (2-18, 2-4 MEAC) nearly pulled of a massive comeback after falling behind NCCU (4-17, 3-1 MEAC) 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Melkayla Irvis laced an RBI single up the middle, scoring Desirae Beachem from third to cut the Eagles lead to 5-1.
The Rattlers put more pressure on the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs.
Seriah Brokenborough hit her first homer of the season, drilling a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall.
Anizya Vargas picked up an RBI when drew bases loaded walk to pull the Rattlers within two.
Destiny Cuevas added a sacrifice fly to trim NCCU's lead to 5-4.
The Rattlers had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners at first and second with two out, but couldn't drive any runs home.
Nadia Zenteno (0-7) surrendered five runs on 11 hits while striking out two through 5.0 innings of work.
Game 2
FAMU pitcher
Gabriella Williams (2-3), picked up her second win of the season, as FAMU avoided a sweep, defeating NCCU 6-4 in Sunday's second contest.
Williams held the Eagles to four runs (three earned) on 10 while going the distance for the victory.
Irvis hit a leadoff triple down the right field line putting the Rattlers in scoring position.
Destiny Cuevas drove her home on a groundball to shortstop. Following a walk,
Sydnee Worthy smacked a double to left center field, scoring Brokenborough from first base, giving the Rattlers an early 2-0 lead.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Beachem hit an RBI double, giving FAMU a 4-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.
After the Eagles tied the game at 4-4- in the top of the fifth, FAMU pushed ahead for good when
Kenyaamari Jones hit a two RBI single.
FAMU kept NCCU at bay over the next two innings to claim the victory.
On Deck
FAMU takes on South Carolina State in a four-game series with doubleheaders on April 2 and 3. The series marks the final home series of the year for the Rattlers. First pitch on April 2 is set for 4 p.m.
